Many workplace and mine safety fines will increase for the first time in years under an interim final rule published in the Federal Register July 1st.  

This is required under section HR 1314 of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015.  In the section called Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act Improvements Act requires most federal agencies to adjust civil monetary penalties in a one-time catch up increase scheduled to take effect on August 1st. 

Later, the penalties will rise each year with inflation.   OSHA penalties were last increased in 1990 Under the interim final rule (RIN:1290-AA31), OSHA will increase maximum fines for willful or repeated violations from $70,000 to $124,709.

Minimum penalties will also rise from $5,000 to $8,908. The penalty for serious and other-than-serious violations will increase from $7,000 to $12,471.
