Global wood consumption increased by only 0.3% in 2019, the lowest increase in the last decade, after growing by an average of 2.2% per year for the last 20 years. China, North America and Europe account for more than 75% of global wood consumption.

China to amend Forest Law

The Environmental Investigation Agency reports that China will amend its Forest Law to include a national ban on buying, processing or transporting illegally sourced timber. China is the world’s largest importer of wood and the world’s largest exporter of wood-based products. Several organizations have estimated that 15-30% of all timber traded globally has been illegally harvested.

Experts debate Green building methods

Many believe there is significant room for improvement in green building standards, as some experts question the accuracy of the certification processes. Even though various programs have attempted to mainstream tight building envelopes, reduced water use, connection to public transport and the deployment of low-emission materials, only about 5% of buildings are certified. Architects are turning to a type of certification that measures the performance of a building after at least 12 months of operation.
