IKEA LINKED TO ILLEGAL LOGGING

IKEA, the world’s largest retailer of wood furniture, is accused of using illegally felled wood from Ukraine in their products. An environmental watchdog claims that the Forest Stewardship Council, one of the largest timber certification programs in the world, failed to take action on this prohibited logging even after Ukraine’s state forestry enterprise was found to be illegally granting logging permits in 2018.

DOL ANNOUNCES FUNDS TO SUPPORT TRAINING AND APPRENTICESHIP

Last week the Department of Labor announced the availability of $40 million in Strengthening Community Colleges Training Grants to expand colleges' ability to meet labor market demand for a skilled workforce.

In addition, $4.1 million in funds is now available to support women's participation in apprenticeships and nontraditional occupations (such as in manufacturing).

ECONOMIC UPDATE:

  • Existing home sales fell 9.7% in May.
  • Lumber prices hit an two-year high in May at $523 per 1,000 board feet.
  • There were 328,000 manufacturing job openings in May, up from 315,000 in April .
  • Manufacturers hired 426,000 workers in May, the most since April 2001. At the same time, total separations have declined from an all-time high of 804,000 in March, to 762,000 in April, to 284,000 in May, the lowest since November 2016.
  • The ISM® Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index® reported that manufacturing activity rebounded in June, expanding at the fastest pace since April 2019.
  • After declining by 11% and 13.5% in March and April, respectively, new orders for manufactured goods rose by 8% in May.
