Happy new year from KCMA! We wanted to share one last industry update for 2019 to let you know what's been happening in the cabinet industry during the month of December:

2019 GLOBAL KITCHEN STUDY

Earlier this Fall the Silestone Institute released its annual Global Kitchen Study. This year's report, titled "Global Kitchen: The Kitchen, The Heart of the Home" surveyed kitchen design firms, as well as insights from the design, culinary, domestic technology, sociology, nutrition, and sustainability fields. Findings include:

  • The kitchen remains the central role in the home, impacting other spaces such as dining rooms and living rooms
  • Kitchens are increasingly becoming a space to address issues tied to health and well being
  • Kitchens that don't look like kitchens represent an increasingly popular trend

Technology's influence in the kitchen - 54% of survey respondents use social media as inspiration to renovate or redecorate their kitchen.

COMMERCE AFFIRMS RADIATA PINE CIRCUMVENTION

Last month the US Department of Commerce (DOC) affirmed its preliminary determination that decorative softwood-faced plywood is subject to an antidumping and countervailing duty order of 194%. As we previously reported, the Coalition of Fair Trade of Hardwood Plywood filed a petition with DOC last year noting that Chinese hardwood plywood products with face and back veneers made of softwood species suitable for decorative uses are circumventing the recently issued antidumping and countervailing duty orders on hardwood plywood products from China.

DAYCARE THE SOLUTION FOR SMALL/MEDIUM SIZE BUSINESSES?

A recent article in IndustryWeek highlights how one small/medium-sized manufacturer (SME)in a small town handled its workforce problem. Daycare turned out to be the answer. After analyzing the company’s employee turnover rate (50 employees, 20% annual turnover rate), the owner hit upon a creative solution - providing daycare facilities. While daycare helped the company’s single mothers, other workers utilized the discounted service as well.

CKCA PROMOTES PRO-CANADIAN BUILT CABINETS 

The Canadian Kitchen Cabinets Association (CKCA) launched a marketing campaign promoting a pro-Canadian Built Kitchen Cabinets message at the Woodworking Machinery & Supply Conference last month. The group provided tshirts with the message and distributed "Buy Canadian" pamphlets at its booth.

"Isn’t it about time we started telling Canadians why they should buy Canadian? With so much competition from cheap foreign imports we have to speak up about the differences in Canadian product versus foreign product," explained Sandra Wood, CKCA Executive Director.
